Robert grew up in the small coastal town of Bandon, Oregon spending time at the beach and climbing the now famous rock formations and sea stacks that photographers around the country come to see. Years of time near the sea, on the sea (fishing boats), and in the sea (surfing) have developed in Robert a unique familiarity with the beauty and danger of the ocean and it's tides, waves, currents, and creatures. He began photographing the areas unique sea stacks with a manual camera and black and white film and color slide film in the early 1980s. His love of photography and dedication to the art resulted in him having a full darkroom setup at home while still a teenager - enlarging black and white photographs and mounting color slides. Hours and hours spent learning the crafts of composition, exposure control, depth of field, shutter speed effects, proper film developing, "dodging", "burning"....................like so many others, trying to be like Ansel Adams.
Robert has now lived on the Oregon Coast for several decades enjoying the beach and beautiful temperate rain forests. He has four children and three grandchildren who also reside in the State. You can often find him out at the beach photographing the craggy formations, lugging gear back to the car after the sun sets and the light is gone, still finding wonder in the amazing creation God has given us. He also enjoys backpacking and hiking in the many scenic and remote sections of Oregon wilderness searching out isolated mountain lakes, streams and waterfalls to capture in still art. He has also traveled in all 50 of the United States as well as several other countries with camera in hand.
No longer working with film, Robert continues to love photography in this digital age searching for ways to try and make the camera capture the scene and feeling the way our eyes and minds do when we behold the amazing creation. “The high dynamic range that modern professional-level digital cameras can capture is far beyond what we could imagine back in the film-only days. Still, this range and quality do not come automatically out of the camera. It is necessary to use the camera in manual mode and to be computer savvy. It makes possible exciting images much closer to what our eyes see – a fete virtually impossible with traditional film. It has changed what we expect from a photographic image”.
"I love to capture images of places and times to share with people. Especially places and times that are difficult for others to get to see. God creates the light and the scene. I just have to be there at the right time with the right equipment, and then overcome the camera's limitations with imagination".
Robert Bynum Photography is focused on landscape and fine art photographs and commercial photography for the yachting industry; however family portraits, home and hotel interiors, and the occasional wedding are sometimes accommodated.
